New Year Activity To Find Your Core Identity

Estimated Read Time: 9 minutes 30 seconds. Time With Video: 19 minutes

So 2011 is coming to an end….how crazy is that? This year has flown by.

In 2011 I learned a LOT and have noticed I’ve improved drastically in where I was from the beginning of 2011 until now. I plan on continuing to get better and I believe in doing activities that will help me improve.

As a reader of my blog here, I want to share with you activities that I personally go through and hopefully get some of you to come along with me on my journey. I know that some of you will read this post and never do the activities, but others of you will read this post and take action. This post is going to help YOU, the action taker, the most.

I’m going to start this off with a video from Frank Kern, who is one of my go-to guys for marketing and personal growth. (I hope to one day have him as one of my close friends). The video is 9 minutes long, but is from his Core Influence seminar and brings up an activity that I truly got a lot out of and feel you will as well.

The One Question That Will Change You Forever.

“If there were no limitations or consequences, what would your perfect average day look like?”

****Please watch the video above to see what limitations or consequences are and how they will be used in the questions.****

So this seems like a pretty easy question to answer, right? Well to be honest with you, it is a little more difficult than it appears on the surface. At least it was that way for me.

I spent some time looking around the good ole Internet for other people who have answered these questions and came up fairly empty-handed. I see that a lot of people have simply written out the exact questions that Frank tells people to answer, but not many people seem to have given their answers to these questions.

So, in the spirit of personal growth, I’ve decided to share with you my answers. This is similar to the 101 Reasons Why I Do What I Do post that I did earlier this year.

It turned out to be two pages long and here are my answers. The font that is bold will be the questions and the normal font will be my answers to these questions. When you are doing this activity, all you need to do is answer the bold questions.

My Average Perfect Day

Where would I Live? I would live at a beach, either in San Diego or near there… or somewhere in Florida. Right now I’m living on a lake in Orlando, Florida and absolutely love it, but I’ve never lived on the ocean before and want to have that experience as well.

What would my house look like? My house overlooks the ocean with a very elegant design to it. Inside there are 3 bedrooms and 3.5 bathrooms. Inside I have a home office with dual 27 inch iMac monitors for work and all the walls have IdeaPaint on them to draw out ideas. In another room is a home video recording studio that I can use to create video content for clients and to give away for free. There is a pool and jacuzzi outside on the patio. Upstairs is a balcony that is directly outside of my bedroom and overlooks the ocean.  The house is just outside of town so I can go into the city each day.

What time would I wake up? I will wake up around 7am each day.

What would I see first thing in the morning? My bedroom will overlook the ocean so I see the waves crashing and the sun coming up each morning.

What would I do in the morning? I will have a glass of water and then do some form of exercise. I’d either run, bike, surf or go to the gym for an hour.

What would I think about first thing in the morning? How grateful I am for my family, friends and the life I get to live.

What would I say in the morning? I will talk with my girlfriend about the day ahead and what our plans are for the day. We will have conversations that get my brain up and running.

What would I have for breakfast? I’d either have a green juice or I would have a 2-3 egg omelet with vegetables, legumes and a liter of water.

What would I think about during breakfast? What I’m going to do for the day and how I can better serve my customers that will make them thrilled to work with me and to buy from me.

What would I do for the first half of my day? I’d be golfing, doing yoga, in the studio creating content or brainstorming with people about how we can improve their ideas.

What would I have for lunch? I’d go out to a healthy restaurant that has fresh food and have either a chicken salad or a chicken bowl with beans, avocado, salsa and lettuce to go along the Slow Carb diet.

Who would I eat with? Friends, family, business partners or girlfriends.

What would my friends be like? My friends believe that anything is possible if you work at it. They are unreasonably optimistic and find ways to make things work. They are hard-workers who also know how and when to enjoy life. They are smarter than me and constantly challenge me to become better. My friends are passionate about living their dreams and find a way to live their perfect day each day. They are interesting people who are world travelers and we always have great conversations.

What would we talk about during lunch? We would celebrate being alive, talk about what we did earlier in the day or ideas that we are currently working on. We’d probably also talk about girls, because they tend to be a fun topic to talk about.

Deeper questions…

What would I do for personal fulfillment? I would strive to make products that truly help people solve problems. When I see people accomplish great things, I feel better about myself and am thankful that I was able to help them accomplish something. I will volunteer to help kids learn sports and help these kids learn important life lessons.

What life purpose will I strive towards? This was a difficult question for me to answer. I came up with “to make a meaningful impact in a positive way in the lives of 1 million people”. Now i’m not 100% sure of how I am going to do that, but I know that it’s something that I want to do.

What would my business be? I’d be a creative consultant. I will help my clients come up with new ideas that help grow their businesses. I would do this through 1-on-1 sessions as well as larger team group trainings. We will work together on creating content for my clients’ businesses and I will help them bring their vision to reality. I’d also have a team that handles all of the tedious tasks that I do not personally experience fulfillment from.

What time would I start work? By 1pm I will be done with lunch and will be able to start my work day. I don’t work very well early in the morning and find my most productive times for getting work done starts around 1pm.

What would I actually “DO” at work? I would create content for information products that I have created, work on projects with and for clients, create videos that are both educational and entertaining and find creative ways to spread messages.

What are my clients like? My clients are like family to me. They love the content that I help them create and they are ecstatic about the work that my team does for them. They pay me on time and often give me bonuses for over-delivering on projects I do for them. The majority of these bonuses gets shared with my team for doing the great work that they do. Money is no option for my clients because I help them make 10-100 times more money than they could have made on their own. They are extremely happy to share the increase in profits with me because I help them make this money.

What is my relationship like? Another difficult one for me… my girlfriend will have to constantly challenge me to become a better person, she helps me to push myself to grow and to evolve. She is intelligent as well as beautiful, yet has a side to her where she won’t take shit from anyone (including me). We are physically and intellectually attracted to each other and love spending time together doing things like exercising, traveling and volunteering. We help each other in any way we can and are constantly striving to improve ourselves.

What would I do for family time? I don’t have any children and don’t intend to for a while, so my family time would be spent with my existing family when I visit them in NY or they come to visit me. We’d go golfing, brainstorm and just talk about life experiences that we are having. I’d speak with them daily, most of the time on the phone to catch up because they don’t live near me.

What would I do at night? At night after working, if I was satisfied with everything that I had finished for the day I will hang out with friends or girlfriends. We will go out to dinner some nights and then go out to a bar for a drink or two, other nights we will stay in and cook at home.

Who would I do it with? lol at Frank talking about Beavis and Butthead at this point. I would do these activities with girlfriends or with friends. Some nights I will hang out with just my guy friends, while other nights will be just my girlfriend and I, other nights would be a combination of friends and girlfriends. Although I’d just “do it” with my girlfriend 😉 ehh hehehe I said “do it”.

What are my thoughts as I go to sleep? I will think about what I had accomplished throughout the day. I will think about how excited one of my clients was that his new promotion that we worked on worked out extremely well and they sold out of their product. Other nights I will think about how happy a kid was when he learned how to do a certain trick in soccer, basketball or golf that I had helped him learn. As I drift off to sleep, I think of how grateful I am that I get to live such a phenomenal life.

My final thoughts..

This activity was harder than I thought and ended up being a pretty long post. I want to thank you for taking the time to read it, and I also want to challenge you to do this activity for yourself. It’s going to take you some time to finish, but it’s also going to get you to take a step back and take a look at what you’re doing with your life. If you aren’t currently happy with where you are going, you’re going to need to find out why you are unhappy and then take the proper steps to achieving happiness.

If you want to watch the whole Core Influence seminar, watch the video below.

If you took the time to do this activity, do yourself a favor and write it out on your blog. You’ll create more content for your blog which will help increase your traffic and you’ll also put it in writing what your core identity is. People will be able to connect with you on this identity and it might help you grow your business. If you do write out your answers and turn them into a blog post, leave a link to your post in the comments below!

Great exercise Chris! I’ve done one very similar last year where I mapped out my ideal – though certainly not in this amount of detail 🙂

I think the more time and effort you put into something like this, the better your result will be. Similar stuff is true with things like a vision board. You could whip one out in under an hour or you could create a practice with it that really allows you to set and intention and think through it… it may take you half a day but imagine what more you can create with that sort of deliberate and focused activity?

Thanks Avram! How did your exercise end up working out for ya?

I’ve gotta make a new vision board now…I don’t have one right now and the one I created a few years ago…well, most of it has come true 😀

I love this post.

It is very thought provoking. I am an aspiring entrepreneur and am enjoying learning everything I can.

My plans for the new year:
1. To get my business finally off the ground floor.
2. To lose the last 15 lbs to get to my goal weight.
3. To buy a new home.
4. To take a vacation, Martial Arts training at Shaolin Temple in China.
5. To continue towards my goals and achieve all I can.
