Learning and doing something new…
As I write this I am learning something new… no, it isn’t how to fly…yet
That’ll come in time.
I should admit something: I’ve been lucky my whole life.
I have typically been good or above average on everything that I have tried. When I was in high school, I was a 3 sport athlete(soccer, basketball, golf) and was pretty good at each of them. When I first learned how to juggle, learned to water ski, play ping pong,I picked them up quickly…its just how I was born and raised.
I’m not telling you this to rub anything in your face but to let you in on a secret of mine and also a problem of mine. The secret is that for each of these teams that I had an influence on, it was for one reason. I would practice as much as I could, I would read about how to improve my game and those around me and I would encourage everyone to play their best.
However, at this point in my life I am running into a problem. You see me up in that picture with an acoustic guitar, Cool huh? Well, my family got me that guitar a few Christmas’ ago….and I haven’t yet learned to play it. Do you want to know why?
Well, even if you don’t…here’s why.
I WAS SCARED OF NOT BEING GOOD AT IT!
Learning to play the guitar is hard work. It takes time, dedication and most of all PRACTICE. I was always scared of taking the time to learn it because I was scared to see myself fail at something. Many of my friends have been playing for years and are just flat out better than me at it.
Building a business is the same as learning the guitar if you are just flat out scared of not being good at it. Let’s face it, we all suck at the beginning. I know I did, I’ve learned a lot but I still know that I have a ton to learn.
There are some secrets that I have used throughout my life to learn to become good at things. The secret is called *cue trumpets*
…. finding an expert and learning from them!
I know, I know, not too much of a secret….but this is good for you and I because it MAKES ANYTHING POSSIBLE. We’ve just got to find the right expert.
The first step is admitting that we are scared…
I have taken the first step in learning the guitar, I was downright afraid of it. Those 6 scary strings, all the frets on it and the weird noises it made if I didn’t hit the right strings. All of these scared me, I didn’t want people to know I suck at it.
But guess what? Being scared hasn’t taught me guitar. I was so scared that I wouldn’t be good that I didn’t even attempt to learn! How stupid was I?
The next step is making the commitment
Now that we have recognized that we flat out suck and that we are scared of something. But, we have found an expert at the given problem and are on the right track. The next step is to make the commitment to become good at what we want to improve.
I’m not saying that we’re all going to become Jimmy Buffett or Mike Dillard overnight. However, they didn’t get to that point overnight either!
The experts were once in the same position that you are in right now, the only difference is that they took action and made the commitment to become better.
Now is your chance…
I know that i’m not going to become a world famous guitarist and to be honest, I don’t want to be. All I desire to do is be able to accomplish something that I was scared of and learn a few songs
You can do the same thing that I am doing, taking action to accomplish a goal. It isn’t hard. Is there something that you’ve always wanted to learn how to do but haven’t had the balls to just do it?
Think about how many inventions there are in the world and think about all of the crazy things that have been accomplished before. People have gone from poverty to millions, invented airplanes, and even people juggling fire! (pssh, I can do that)
All the information we need is readily available
With the internet, we can find a story of someone who has been in our position and gotten to where we want to be.
Let nothing hold you back from becoming who you want to be.
You know of Nike commercials with the “Just Do It” theme. This is the truth more so than anything else that I have ever heard.(It’s also the reason I chose to write my Research Paper for Strategic Management on Nike)
If you can dream it, you can do it. JUST DO IT. That is exactly what I am doing, I am going to JUST DO IT and learn the guitar.
When I finish learning Redemption Song, by Bob Marley I will post it on my youtube channel for you so that you can see that if I can accomplish this, you can accomplish your goal!
If you need help with anything, I’ll try to help you and if I can’t directly help, I will try to find someone in my network who can help you.
Feel free to leave comments and questions, I love to learn from you.
and remember
NOTHING CAN HOLD YOU BACK!!!!
