What Do Nerf Guns, Blue Hair & Juggling Have To Do With Business?

by Chris Hughes on February 12, 2010

Business is often boring. You are well aware of this if you have ever met a typical business-man or woman. It’s got to be this way and not straying from this path.

Well, in my opinion this is BORING. I don’t like boring things, I don’t know about you. If something isn’t fun, I just don’t do it. Simple as that. By the way, I love my life.

I want to release a secret to you that many successful people realize.

Develop and build your business’s personality that stands out. People want to buy from people.

This is Maverick Rule #26 from Yanik Silver’s “34 Rules for Maverick Entrepreneurs: Make More Money, Have More Fun & Give More Back” book. If you don’t have this book yet, get it. You can get it here –> http://www.internetlifestyle.com/blog/ramblings/33-rules-for-maverick-entrepreneurs/

I deal mainly with online marketing and working with offline businesses to take their business online and one thing that I’ve noticed when I go to help these people…. their website bore’s the crap out of me. I’d literally rather write “I will not have a boring website” on a chalkboard 300,000 times than stay another 2 minutes on their site. (actually I’d just leave their site)

When I’m on these websites I have no idea who the business owner is and I really don’t build a connection with them. In fact, it’s so impersonal I feel like i’m trying to communicate with a computer. I’d rather deal with a person than a computer… how about you?

One thing about having a personality is that it creates a bond with your customers. It forms a relationship and the Know, Like & Trust Factor goes up in your relationship! You know what else happens? It creates a fun environment for people doing business with you. It makes them ENJOY the time they spend with you and the product/service you provide.

How Can I Make My Personality Show?

The thing about this question is that it’s really easy. It’s so easy that you can use a camera and YouTube to share your personality in about 20 minutes! With Web 3.0 we’re able to share ourselves like never before. In my videos, I’ve started to share myself with you a ton including my crazy blue hair that I wear for all Duke basketball games ;-)

I’m a little crazy. I do some random things that I find really fun and people seem to respond to it in a great way. It’s crazy how the Universe attracts people to you that are like yourself. I’m crazy passionate about business and marketing and let my passion out when I’m on video or when I’m writing an article.

The Cool Thing Is That You Can Do This Too

You can do the same thing, I juggle so I include that in some videos to share with people my “personal” self as well.

Having a blog is one of the best things you can do to share yourself and your personality with others. I’ve shared a ton of things on this blog and will continue to, I’m growing everyday and the experiences I have shape me into the person I’m becoming. I want to let you know who I am and what I’m all about so that we can develop a relationship, whether it’s me helping  you, you helping me or just having a great friendship I am interested in YOU.

If you don’t have a blog, go get a free self-branded wordpress one at http://bit.ly/6yv6V4

This Might Not Be For Everyone

You might be very uncomfortable with sharing yourself with others, but if you are in business you are going to need to learn how to adapt to this new way of doing business. We’re no longer in the age of business being separate from personal. Everything we do is being shared on Social Networks. What’s the point in hiding who we truly are? I find that life is more fun and more profitable when we are open and honest about who we are AS LONG AS we provide exceptional content and value when doing business.

Creating personality is a key aspect of bonding, of creating zealots for your business and creating more profits for your company.

If you want to be a truly successful Entrepreneur, you need to let your personality shine. Simple as that.

Great post Chris. Understanding who you are and being able to share that transparently with others – your customers, prospects, and business partners – is an awesome way to grow your business.

  • http://WhosChrisHughes.com Chris Hughes

Thanks Krista, you got that right! It makes business more fun as well :)

    Hi Chris
1st, couple of minor tech things: 1) What’s with the YouTube mirror image video? How’d you do that? 2) Having the digitized voice reading each url character by character (esp the l-o-o-o-o-ng one) is a bit of a fail for Odigo IMO. Idea: narrate the posts yourself. I might try that one day too.

On the plus side, I love the toys, juggling and your blue hair! Your point is well made about getting rid of the boring. But talking about juggling, I’m not sure that an IMer can do justice to ALL the social media platforms and develop an online business simultaneously. Sooner or later something's gotta slip from your grasp. Yes?
    –Stew

PS. Time to drop that tie from your gravatar!

  • http://WhosChrisHughes.com Chris Hughes

Hey Stew, what do you mean the YouTube mirror image? At the start of the video? If so, that's done with iMovie

Odiogo is kind of a fail, maybe I should just narrate the posts myself…however that takes a long time and I'll need to find time to do it.

Also, what do you mean by “But talking about juggling, I’m not sure that an IMer can do justice to ALL the social media platforms and develop an online business simultaneously. Sooner or later something's gotta slip from your grasp.”

I'm not quite sure I get what you are asking with this..

Thanks Stew, I've been meaning to meet up with my friend who does professional photography and get some new pictures that are more like who I am however with full-time classes and working it's been difficult to make an appointment with her :-p

I love post like this where is more of a conversation than a newspaper type article. Great words Chris and I totally agree with Krista, Understanding who you are is the one of the best ways to not only grow your business but become a leader in your industry.

Thank you James! I found it's more fun and interactive when it's an open communication as it allows for me to learn from you and learn/teach people what I'm learning at the same time.. I guess it allows for me to grow learning from you!

Thank you so much and I'm glad you enjoy my blog,
    Chris

    Chris!! AWESOME Post bro!!

It's SOOO TRUE that business should be FUN, and not uptight like society has unfortunately made it seem. With the internet allowing anyone to get their message and personality out there, EVERYONE should be taking advantage of this to develop their personal brand.

LOVE the hair, juggling, and NERF GUNS!! ;-)

    Keep ROCKIN dude!! :-)

    - Jomo

  • http://WhosChrisHughes.com Chris Hughes

    Thanks bro!

Keep knocking out great content man, you're doing great!

  • http://WhosChrisHughes.com Chris Hughes

    hahah thanks Jomo!

I hate sitting in business classes when everyone is taking it so seriously, it's in o way how we learn. We've gotta make it fun and exciting and when that happens, thats when the real learning takes place.

With social media we can literally share ourselves like never before. It rocks so much.

Maybe i'll need to include more juggling, blue hair and nerf into my vids…people seem to love them hahaha

    Talk soon bro,
    Chris

  • http://www.steps4successtoday.com Jomo

    Absolutely DO IT man!! :-)

We only TRULY learn when things get fun and exciting, NOT boring.

Chris, You had me falling out of my chair laughing! LOVE the blue hair, juggling, et al. It truly makes you stand out from the crowd.

Thinking outside of the box is where it's at! I look forward to more of you fun posts:)

  • http://WhosChrisHughes.com Chris Hughes

hahaha I'm glad that you enjoyed this Darlene!! I did it to start “edutaining” people (educating + entertaining)

Thinking outside of the box leads to more fun, productivity and better relationships IMO :)

  • http://WhosChrisHughes.com Chris Hughes

you got that right bro! Sitting in 95% of my classes bores the crap out of me…no wonder that most Entrepreneur's drop out of college haha

Maybe we need to create a college that edutains people… hmm, future big ideas… :)

  • MouyyadA

    Great post Chris.

Thats a mistake that many people make, they stick with generic and safe instead of allowing there personality to show through there content.

Great point about no longer is business separate from personal, your right with our online world personal is business and vice versa.

  • debbybeachy

Hey Chris…Okay ha! ha! I just love this post! I'm with you…if it's not fun why do it! I've learned a lot about personality types as I study people. Your personality is a “blue” (using colors is easier then the tech. word) I'm a blue as well, so I would have to say your blue hair was perfect! I'm looking forward to my fun and valuabe insights on your blog!
    Cheers
    Debby

  • http://WhosChrisHughes.com Chris Hughes

Generic and safe is boring… I've been there and found out that it didn't work out to well for me :-p I wasn't having fun and people weren't really enjoying learning…

I'm kind of glad that the shift has taken place making business personal and vice versa. It's really different from traditional business but in my opinion it's more fun. It allows for profitable business relationships as we don't realize that we're actually “working”.

I love how the world is changing and how we get to adapt to it!

    Thanks for participating bud!

  • http://WhosChrisHughes.com Chris Hughes

hehe I am definitely a “blue” with a hint of red :)

I guess blues seem to connect, blue shirt in your gravatar ;-)

I'm glad you are enjoying the blog! Is there anything you'd like to see improved/added?

    Thanks for participating :)

People like to do business with someone they know and will refer like crazy the ones they love! You are right on here!

  • http://WhosChrisHughes.com Chris Hughes

Hey Robin! Thank you for the compliment :) I really enjoy Social Media and love how it allows me to connect with like minded people and help them with the things that I'm learning!

If there's anything I can help you with let me know!

    Hey Chris,
Props are great in public speaking and in getting your audience's attention, so it's great that you use the blue hair and juggling balls. Your video is a great example in distinguishing yourself online.
    Great site – I'll revisit.

    Take care,
    Larry
