Purple Cows and Outrageous Advertising?

purplecow2“A remarkable product or service is like a purple cow. Brown cows are boring: purple ones are worth mentioning. Those ideas spread; those organizations grow. The essence of what’s happening in the market today revolves around creating purple cows”-Seth Godin, TRIBES

You may or may not have had the time to learn about Seth Godin or his wildly successful ideas and plans.

I’m here to give you an important tip that I’ve learned from Seth. It’s fairly simple and if you get it then you are going to be successful. Simple as that.

Ideas that spread, win.

If you have an idea, and it bores the crap out of everyone who hears it, no one is going to care to spread it! Boring organizations and ideas just don’t grow. We also know that if you are stuck working in a never changing environment at your job, you’ll end up wanting to rip the hair out of your head because you are not having any fun!

Good ideas are like viruses, they spread like crazy once they are known. One example of this is the purple cow above. If you have ever seen a purple cow, I’m sure that it really stood out in your mind from the rest of the white and black ones. Great ideas are like purple cows. They are far and few between.

So how do I create a purple cow?

The simplest way to do this is take the ordinary and flip it, put a different spin on it and make it your own. Make it something that is memorable to anyone who see’s your product or uses your service.

It really isn’t that hard to differentiate your product or service from everyone else, however we often don’t do it. This is mainly due to fear- fear of failure, fear of success or the fear of being different. You need to learn to conquer your fears and do what’s necessary for you to succeed.

Someone who I recommend taking a look at to learn about creating a purple cow is Bill Glazer. He is the author of “Outrageous Advertising that’s Outrageously Successful” and this book was created for the 99% of small business owners who are dissatisfied with the results they get from their current advertising.

You can tell from the cover of the book that Bill is pretty outrageous and once you get to see his marketing examples for his men’s clothing store, you’ll realize that he truly is OUTRAGEOUS, yet he’s also OUTRAGEOUSLY successful. He has partnered with Dan Kennedy!

Bill’s in a straight jacket for the cover of this book, showing just how crazy he really is! The book is full of great idea’s that are applicable to all types of small businesses. This includes but is not limited to: diners, tuxedo rentals, information marketing, men’s clothing, fishing products, dentists and tons of others.

If you are in business and notice that you are not moving or improving and no one cares to share your message, you may need to make a change.

Find your purple cow and be different!
