Is The Media Lying To Us?

As you are aware(or at least should be), today November 6 2012 is Election Day here in the good ole US of A.

While I was doing one of my daily commitments, which is to read daily I came across some interesting information in the book Trust Me I’m Lying: Confessions of a Media Manipulator.

This book is written by this dude Ryan Holiday who is considered a “media manipulator“.

What is Media Manipulation?

 

If you don’t know, you should. Because media manipulation currently shapes everything you read, hear and watch online. Everything.

How scary is that?

Ryan’s job was to use the media to make people do or think things they otherwise would not. People like him are responsible for what you are currently thinking about right now. Whether you are scared about who’s going to win the election, whether the economy is in the shitter or if it is improving.

These media manipulators are there, behind the curtain, pulling the puppet strings that dictate how we as the general public feel about certain topics. But that is about to get harder: he’s spilling his secrets and turned his talents from exploiting media vulnerabilities to exposing them—for your benefit.

This media manipulation is literally EVERYWHERE.

Tim Ferriss wrote about it in his post The 5 Top-Performing American Apparel Ads, and How They Get PR for Free (NSFW) and shows you some prime examples of how even clothing companies are manipulating the way we make decisions.

What’s scary to me is that all forms of media are doing this in one way or another and its whether we want to admit it or not.

Everything that we see and hear is in one way or another impacting our lives, whether for good or bad. The commercials we see on TV have been impacting the decisions we make on presidential candidates, on what fast food chains we end up pulling into and even the beer we choose to buy while we’re in the grocery store.

Something that I took out of the book is that it’s actually not that difficult to become one of these media manipulators. Ryan provides some steps that you can take to get featured on different high traffic news blogs by making strategic moves.

haha it’s just a little rabbit hole! It’s unreal how this happens so much and none of the news sources do enough resource checking on their information to verify it all. 

I guess that’s why it’s so important for us to learn how to positively impact the masses.
