Book Review: “Go-Givers Sell More” by @BobBurg & @JohnDavidMann

by Chris Hughes

If you’ve been a fan of my blog for any time now, you have probably read the book review of “The Go-Giver” and know that I am a HUGE fan of the concept and practice of providing massive value up front. The concept of becoming someone of value, creating something of value to give to others and be compensated for making others lives better has been something that I have been striving to do since reading the book.

However, just like you may have experienced if you read the book, I just didn’t know how to apply it to my business. What I do is help offline business owners grow their business by using online marketing and Social Media. But…how was I supposed to bring the concept of the Go-Giver into my business? I felt like I had a little “brain fart”.

The first steps I took…

I did take time to give free consultations to some business owners who were running MLM businesses and others who were just interested in learning about how the internet could possibly help their business. I still offer these and you can get one for free by clicking the “booknow” button on the of my blog.

However, the thing that kind of sucked about this was that I had been giving a LOT of my time but not getting much compensation for my time as most of the people I was working with did not have a budget that they could set aside for marketing and coaching. I did notice that people were starting to CALL ME asking for my opinion and input on certain business decisions and this led me to becoming really happy because I could allow my number 1 strength to come out, which is my business ideas.

One of the most important things I learned

As a salesperson, which lets face it, everyone is a salesperson. We must realize that selling is NOT only about us and making the sale or even forcing the sale. Selling is about helping someone get what they want. The cool thing about becoming a Go-Giver is that by sharpening your focus in your business on creating value for others, you actually make yourself so valuable to your market that  even if the economy is terrible, people will STILL seek you out, ultimately leading to more demand for your product/service.

The cool thing about value creation to me is that your goal switches from making a sale to creating value for others. The way this works is that you are dependent on nobody but yourself. You basically create your own economy and this causes your business to stand out and ROCK IT!

Even in what’s considered a down economy (as apparently the news is saying) Go-Giver’s have a different attitude. By providing more in value than we receive in payment, we are using the trade secret of all exceptional businesses. Think about all the businesses that you have shared with others because of outstanding value for the money? Perhaps you’ve heard of Zappos who is probably the best example of this as of today.

Making sales is a concept. Touching lives is a reality. Sales is not about concepts; it’s about people.

When we are speaking to a prospect and they bring up your competitor, no matter if it’s a major competitor or a minor competitor, go out of your way to say something nice about him or her. This shows that you respect your competitor and helps earn you respect. This is something that I find is a little scary for us as young entrepreneurs as we grow up with the “competition= evil mindset” however, Collaboration is good for Entrepreneurs.

I don’t want to take up your whole day reading this so I’ve actually broken each of the 5 Laws of Stratospheric Success into different blog posts. If you are stuck on any of these laws, I’d recommend you check out the blog as they explain a more in-depth example of each of these.

The 5 Laws of Stratospheric Success

1) The Law of Value

2) The Law of Compensation

3) The Law of Influence

4) The Law of Authenticity

5) The Law of Receptivity

In my opinion, this book is a resource that you ABSOLUTELY NEED to own. There’s no beating around the bush here. Go buy this book. ASAP

  • I am exited that these ideas are catching fire! I feel a paradigm shift in the way people do business, ESPECIALLY through the internet. I have not read this book yet, but I do implement these techniques in my life and the outcomes are amazing! You hit the nail on the head Chris with reference to "creating your own little economy". Everyone is in control of their own destiny, and that is a perfect example.

    Great post, keep them coming!
  • Thanks for the comment Chris!

The business world is definitely shifting to a value first way of business. I love that this is the shift as too many people waste money without first getting value from someone! By providing the value up front, it allows for our prospects/customers to understand who we are as a business provider and how we work/can help them!

It makes it a LOT more fun as well because we get to help more people :)

  • Hi Chris,

I haven't read this book but have heard much about it lately. I love the concept of marketers realizing that it's all about adding value and giving - and that when we do this we receive as a result.

Yes, the "dog eat dog" days are gone - at least in the circles that I run in, and it definitely makes the world a better place.

Thanks for the review and for the reminder to add this to my list of books to read in 2010!
  • Hey Kathy! The book is coming out on February 18th! I was lucky enough to get a copy of it from Bob and John to review on my blog and let them know what I thought! I am so appreciative of that and glad that I had this opportunity :)

It's about time that marketers realize that it's more than a one way street IMO. Too many offline business owners who try to bring their business online are not developing relationships and providing value and wondering why they aren't successful online. They need to switch their approach!!!

Create value —> Touch people’s lives —>Build Networks —> Be Real —> Stay Open

You are right, the "dog eat dog" world is dead and gone, the "dog helps dog" world seems to be in!

I'm glad that this review has helped you and I hope you have an awesome 2010, this book is definitely a must have resource. I've already read it two times, and I know i'll keep referring back to it when I'm stuck:)

Have an awesome day and thanks for the comment!
  • Wow! Some very good information here Chris!

I look forward to going through the rest of them and learning more. Most people don't understand that it all start with giving and not what "I can get."

Valuable content and I really appreciate you sharing this for all of us to learn.
  • Thank you for the comment Dave and Dawn! I sure didn't understand that it all starts with giving! I was one of the people who thought I basically just deserved to be paid because I knew stuff, how silly of me :) I guess it's books like this that really open my eyes and allow me to grow as a person!

I'm glad you enjoyed the post and look forward to sharing more :)
  • Now I want it EVEN MORE!!! Can't wait to get it :)
  • 16 days Cassie!!! I'll definitely be re-reading it again, I've already re-read it once. I feel like the whole book needs to be highlighted!
  • Cassie,

Wasn't that some great info? I really like the audio feed too!
