If you’ve been a fan of my blog for any time now, you have probably read the book review of “The Go-Giver” and know that I am a HUGE fan of the concept and practice of providing massive value up front. The concept of becoming someone of value, creating something of value to give to others and be compensated for making others lives better has been something that I have been striving to do since reading the book.
However, just like you may have experienced if you read the book, I just didn’t know how to apply it to my business. What I do is help offline business owners grow their business by using online marketing and Social Media. But…how was I supposed to bring the concept of the Go-Giver into my business? I felt like I had a little “brain fart”.
The first steps I took…
I did take time to give free consultations to some business owners who were running MLM businesses and others who were just interested in learning about how the internet could possibly help their business. I still offer these and you can get one for free by clicking the “booknow” button on the of my blog.
However, the thing that kind of sucked about this was that I had been giving a LOT of my time but not getting much compensation for my time as most of the people I was working with did not have a budget that they could set aside for marketing and coaching. I did notice that people were starting to CALL ME asking for my opinion and input on certain business decisions and this led me to becoming really happy because I could allow my number 1 strength to come out, which is my business ideas.
One of the most important things I learned
As a salesperson, which lets face it, everyone is a salesperson. We must realize that selling is NOT only about us and making the sale or even forcing the sale. Selling is about helping someone get what they want. The cool thing about becoming a Go-Giver is that by sharpening your focus in your business on creating value for others, you actually make yourself so valuable to your market that even if the economy is terrible, people will STILL seek you out, ultimately leading to more demand for your product/service.
The cool thing about value creation to me is that your goal switches from making a sale to creating value for others. The way this works is that you are dependent on nobody but yourself. You basically create your own economy and this causes your business to stand out and ROCK IT!
Even in what’s considered a down economy (as apparently the news is saying) Go-Giver’s have a different attitude. By providing more in value than we receive in payment, we are using the trade secret of all exceptional businesses. Think about all the businesses that you have shared with others because of outstanding value for the money? Perhaps you’ve heard of Zappos who is probably the best example of this as of today.
Making sales is a concept. Touching lives is a reality. Sales is not about concepts; it’s about people.
When we are speaking to a prospect and they bring up your competitor, no matter if it’s a major competitor or a minor competitor, go out of your way to say something nice about him or her. This shows that you respect your competitor and helps earn you respect. This is something that I find is a little scary for us as young entrepreneurs as we grow up with the “competition= evil mindset” however, Collaboration is good for Entrepreneurs.
I don’t want to take up your whole day reading this so I’ve actually broken each of the 5 Laws of Stratospheric Success into different blog posts. If you are stuck on any of these laws, I’d recommend you check out the blog as they explain a more in-depth example of each of these.
The 5 Laws of Stratospheric Success
In my opinion, this book is a resource that you ABSOLUTELY NEED to own. There’s no beating around the bush here. Go buy this book. ASAP
